Tories aim to loosen self-defence laws

Citizens Arrest and Self Defence Act to be reintroduced

The federal government has pledged to alter Canada's laws governing self defence, with an eye to giving citizens increased latitude to protect themselves and their property.

In recent years, Canadians who have used violence - and especially firearms - have often faced criminal charges for their actions.

? ? When Ian Thomson awoke one night in August 2010 to find three men throwing firebombs at his rural home in Southwest Ontario, he got out his revolver and fired a few warning shots in the air, scattering the attackers. Police later seized his guns, and laid criminal charges of pointing a firearm and unsafe storage on the 53-year-old, while his assailants were charged with arson. The case is still before the courts.

? ? Only a small handful of Canadians in recent years - including jewelry store owner Dennis Galloway - have used a gun in self defence and were not charged as a result. When robbers burst into his shop in Port Alberni, B.C., and pointed a gun to his wife's head, Galloway took a pistol from his safe. The longtime target shooter killed one robber, and severely wounded the other. The RCMP recommended charges of unsafe storage and careless use of a firearm be laid against Galloway in the 2009 shooting, but the Crown refused.

The federal government has said it will move quickly to re-introduce the Citizens Arrest and Self Defence act, which was tabled in February but died on the order paper with the closure of the 40th Parliament.

The law would permit people threatened with violence to commit a reasonable act to protect themselves or others, as well as use force to protect their property from theft, damage or trespass.

Speed-of-light experiments give baffling result at Cern

Puzzling results from Cern, home of the LHC, have confounded physicists - because it appears subatomic particles have exceeded the speed of light.

Neutrinos sent through the ground from Cern toward the Gran Sasso laboratory 732km away seemed to show up a tiny fraction of a second early.

The result - which threatens to upend a century of physics - will be put online for scrutiny by other scientists.

In the meantime, the group says it is being very cautious about its claims.

"We tried to find all possible explanations for this," said report author Antonio Ereditato of the Opera collaboration.

"We wanted to find a mistake - trivial mistakes, more complicated mistakes, or nasty effects - and we didn't," he told BBC News.

"When you don't find anything, then you say 'Well, now I'm forced to go out and ask the community to scrutinise this.'"

Caught speeding?
The speed of light is the Universe's ultimate speed limit, and much of modern physics - as laid out in part by Albert Einstein in his special theory of relativity - depends on the idea that nothing can exceed it.

Thousands of experiments have been undertaken to measure it ever more precisely, and no result has ever spotted a particle breaking the limit.

But Dr Ereditato and his colleagues have been carrying out an experiment for the last three years that seems to suggest neutrinos have done just that.

Neutrinos come in a number of types, and have recently been seen to switch spontaneously from one type to another.

The team prepares a beam of just one type, muon neutrinos, sending them from Cern to an underground laboratory at Gran Sasso in Italy to see how many show up as a different type, tau neutrinos.

In the course of doing the experiments, the researchers noticed that the particles showed up a few billionths of a second sooner than light would over the same distance.

The team measured the travel times of neutrino bunches some 15,000 times, and have reached a level of statistical significance that in scientific circles would count as a formal discovery.

But the group understands that what are known as "systematic errors" could easily make an erroneous result look like a breaking of the ultimate speed limit, and that has motivated them to publish their measurements.

"My dream would be that another, independent experiment finds the same thing - then I would be relieved," Dr Ereditato said.

But for now, he explained, "we are not claiming things, we want just to be helped by the community in understanding our crazy result - because it is crazy".

"And of course the consequences can be very serious."

Spartacus: Blood and Sand

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Andy Whitfield, the 39-year-old star of the cable series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has died.
Manager Sam Maydew says Whitfield died Sunday of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Sydney, Australia.
Whitfield's wife Vashti in a statement called her husband a "beautiful young warrior" who died on a "sunny Sydney morning" in the "arms of his loving wife."
Whitfield - who was born in Wales and lived in Australia - was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the title hero in "Spartacus," a hit original series for the Starz network that made waves with its graphic violence and sexuality.
Whitfield was preparing for the second season when he was diagnosed 18 months ago.
In January the network announced that another Australian actor, Liam McIntyre, would take over the role.

510-943-3040 Scam

Do not fall for this. They call you and tell you that they are from Windows. They then tell you that your computer is sending out viruses and ask you to disable your firewall and share your computer with them so they can fix this. It's all a SCAM.

If you call them on it, they can be quite rude with you. The info I got on them was:

Labour Day Classic?

It's going to be a good game but vs. anyone but the Argos, they shouldn't be allowed to call it that.  Just my two cents.

Out and about with Aunt Reta today.

We had a good day, Uncle Paul and our dearest friend of the family, Aunt Reta.  We got some of her banking done, then had dinner at Russel Williams in Aldershot.  It's always nice to help people and especially nice when those people are old friends.  Good for the soul!

Dambusters!

Operation Chastise was an attack on German dams carried out on 16–17 May 1943 by Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron, subsequently known as the "Dambusters", using a specially developed "bouncing bomb" invented and developed by Barnes Wallis. The Möhne and Edersee Dams were breached, causing catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr valley and of villages in the Eder valley, while the Sorpe dam sustained only minor damage.

Your Highness

Pretty funny movie.  Juvenile humour but that's how I like it sometimes.  The fact that James Franco AND Natile Portman were in it makes me wonder what they saw in the project.  Maybe they owed the studio a picture...

What Happened on August 4th This Day in History

Oh crap a trip to Zellers!

Don't get me wrong I love Zellers, but the place is a complete mess.  I bought a pair of flip-flops, a knuckle bone for Rooster, two tubes of toothpaste, two packs of cheap disposable razors (to trim my sideburns) and a new crappy pair of (I don't care if they break) sunglasses.  The coupon I got online garnered online got me 20 bonus AirMiles too!

Insulin pump cartridge change day!

Exciting stuff eh?  I'm on the Animas Ping pushing Humalog insulin at an average 35 units total daily dose.  It's really not that time consuming once you get the hang of it.

Much needed rain

Well it finally rained here today.  Our grass was literally brown and crunchy.  It's starting to green-up even only a few hours after the rain.  I guess this means I'll need to cut it soon.  It's been well over a month since we've ever ran the mower.
